Kenyan anti-narcotics agencies have intensified crackdown on illicit drug trafficking following the arrest of suspects and the seizure of large quantities of bhang in a coordinated operation carried out in Nakuru and Elgeyo-Marakwet counties.

The first operation was in Nakuru County, where detectives from the Anti-Narcotics unit (ANU), acting on credible intelligence and with the help of officers from the Dog Unit, intercepted a silver Toyota Voxy along the Kabarak-Nakuru Road. The vehicle was suspected to be ferrying a major consignment of narcotic drugs.
According to investigators, the operation was carried out quickly, with officers stopping the vehicle for a search. However, the driver managed to escape under circumstances that are still under investigations. The co-driver, Dennis Mukungua, was arrested at the scene.
The police conducted a thorough search in the vehicle, which led to the recovery of a substantial quantity of cannabis sativa, alongside 12 green sacks and 12 tightly packed bales of bhang, weighing a total of 387 kilograms, with an estimated street value of approximately Sh11.61 million.
Mukungua was taken into custody and escorted to the police station together with the recovered narcotics and the impounded vehicle.
He remains in custody awaiting his arraignment in court while the detectives are still searching for the escaped driver and investigate the wider network believed to be behind the shipment.
In a separate operation in Elgeyo-Marakwet County, detectives from Keiyo South Sub-County, in cooperation with officers from Metkei Police Station, intercepted another suspected drug courier vehicle in the Kapchorwa area of Kamwosor location.
The vehicle, a Toyota Fielder, which bored the registration number KDV 627S was being driven by Vincent Odhiambo.
A search of the vehicle uncovered 7 bags of bhang, leading to the immediate arrest of the driver. Like his counterpart, Odhiambo was escorted, along with the seized drugs and vehicle, to Metkei police station for necessary legal proceedings.
Following the two incidents, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has reaffirmed the members of the public on its commitment to dismantling drug trafficking syndicates across the country, through sustained operations and emphasized that there will be zero tolerance for traffickers regardless of their status.
