The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has issued a public clarification on the payment of instant traffic fines, urging motorists to remain vigilant against fraudsters exploiting the system through fake payment demands.

In a statement released on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, the Authority emphasized that although the eCitizen platform remains the official government payment gateway for many public services, instant traffic fines are not paid through eCitizen.
“The eCitizen is secure and it serves as the official payment gateway for Government services. NTSA remains one of the largest users of the eCitizen platform.Instant fines are not paid through the eCitizen platform,” NTSA reiterated.
Instead, NTSA directed that all instant fines must be paid physically at Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) branches or through authorized KCB agents.
The agency said the move was informed by numerous reports of SMS scams targeting motorists with fake fine payment requests.
According to NTSA, requiring in-person payments adds a critical layer of verification, helping to protect members of the public from social engineering and other fraudulent schemes.
The Authority further noted that genuine instant fine notifications are sent exclusively through its official short code, 22847_NTSA, and include clear details of the offence committed, the penalty imposed, and payment instructions.
“Instant fine notifications are sent from NTSA’s official short code (22847_NTSA) and include clear details of the offence, penalty, and payment instructions,” NTSA noted.
NTSA has advised motorists to verify the source of any fine notification before making payments and to rely only on its official communication channels for accurate information.
The clarification, the Authority said, is intended to curb misinformation, safeguard the public, and ensure the smooth implementation of road safety measures across the country.
