Kenya Railways has announced the official commencement of construction works for the Naivasha-Kisumu-Malaba Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) project, marking a major milestone in the expansion of the country’s rail infrastructure.

The project, which was launched by President William Ruto on March 18, 2026, has now moved into the implementation phase, with construction activities officially underway in Narok County.
“Today is truly a great day for Kenya Railways and for Kenya. Today marks a historic milestone as the official construction works for the Naivasha–Kisumu–Malaba Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) Project have commenced in Narok County,” Kenya Railways announced.
According to Kenya Railways, Narok County accounts for approximately 100 kilometres of the SGR corridor and is expected to play a critical role in the execution of the project.
The corporation said the area has recorded strong enthusiasm from residents, who anticipate significant economic and social benefits once the railway becomes operational.
“Narok residents have shown great enthusiasm & optimism for this project, reflecting the immense opportunities it is expected to unlock for the region,” Kenya Railways noted.
Kenya Railways further said the project is expected to transform Kenya’s transport and logistics sector by improving connectivity, boosting trade, and unlocking new economic opportunities along the corridor.
The corporation added that it is working closely with the National Land Commission (NLC) to facilitate land acquisition processes, with officials already deployed on the ground to engage affected landowners and support smooth implementation.
Kenya Railways Managing Director Philip Mainga encouraged property owners and other affected persons to liaise directly with the NLC to address any concerns related to compensation and land acquisition.
The railway project is part of Kenya’s broader infrastructure agenda aimed at enhancing regional connectivity and supporting long-term national development.
The launch was witnessed by Kenya Railways Managing Director Philip Mainga, Narok County Commissioner Kipkech Lotiatia, Narok County Secretary Mayan Tuya, National Government officials, representatives from the National Land Commission, the project contractor, local leaders, and community stakeholders.
