U.S.-Iran tensions rise as Donald Trump announces new talks push

Tensions between the United States and Iran remain high, with fresh talks expected even as strong warnings continue to come from Washington.

U.S. President Donald Trump

Donald Trump said on Sunday that he would send a delegation to Pakistan for negotiations with Iran, while at the same time issuing a sharp warning if no agreement is reached.

In a social media post, he wrote , “NO MORE MR. NICE GUY!” and warned that without a deal, the United States was going to knock out every single Power Plant, and every single Bridge, in Iran.

The planned talks come just days before the end of a fragile two-week ceasefire involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.

The truce followed a conflict that began after joint US-Israeli strikes on Iran in late February.

So far, diplomatic efforts have made little progress. Only one round of negotiations was held in a 21-hour session in Islamabad on April 11 which ended without a clear agreement. However, officials say preparations for further talks have continued behind the scenes.

Despite his strong tone, Trump signaled willingness to reach a resolution. “We’re offering a very fair and reasonable deal, and I hope they take it”, said President Trump.

On the Iranian side, there are signs that an agreement may not come easily.

Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said on Saturday that the two sides are still far from the final discussion highlighting the gap that remains between them.

At the center of the dispute is Iran’s nuclear programme, which Washington says could lead to the development of nuclear weapons , a claim Tehran has repeatedly denied.

The issue had already been under discussion in earlier talks mediated by Oman before the recent conflict began.

The situation has been further complicated by Iran’s move to close the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil and gas shipments.

The closure has raised concerns about energy supplies and added pressure to ongoing negotiations.

With no date yet set for the next round of talks, uncertainty remains over whether diplomacy will succeed or tensions will rise again once the ceasefire period ends.
