Two Persons of Interest in Custody as DCI Intensifies Probe Into Killing of Dr Victoria Mutiso

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has announced a major breakthrough in the investigation into the fatal shooting of mental health researcher Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso, confirming that two persons of interest are in custody as detectives intensify efforts to unravel the killing.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the DCI said homicide detectives, working alongside specialized investigative and forensic teams, have made significant progress since taking over the investigation into the fatal shooting, which occurred on July 29, 2026, in Nairobi’s Upper Hill area.

According to the agency, investigators have pursued multiple leads through witness interviews, forensic examinations and targeted operations aimed at identifying those behind the killing.

As part of the ongoing probe, detectives executed searches at premises linked to individuals under investigation. During the operations, officers recovered exhibits believed to be relevant to the case, which are currently undergoing detailed forensic analysis.

The DCI confirmed that two persons of interest are being lawfully held and are undergoing interrogation as investigators continue to piece together the circumstances surrounding the killing.

However, the identities of the suspects have not been disclosed, with the agency saying the decision was necessary to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation.

“Additional investigative actions remain underway as detectives continue to analyse the recovered exhibits and pursue other critical leads,” the DCI said.

The agency reiterated its commitment to conducting a thorough, impartial and expeditious investigation to establish the full circumstances surrounding Dr Mutiso’s death and ensure that anyone found responsible is brought to justice.

The DCI also conveyed its condolences to Dr Mutiso’s family, friends and colleagues, while thanking members of the public for their cooperation during the investigation.

Authorities have appealed to anyone with information that could assist the investigation to report to the nearest police station or anonymously through the DCI’s #FichuaKwaDCI reporting platform via its toll-free line or WhatsApp channel.

Dr Mutiso, the Director of the Africa Institute of Mental and Brain Health (AFRIMEB), was shot dead while travelling to work in what investigators believe was a targeted attack.

Detectives have previously indicated they are examining several leads, including reports that she had received threats prior to her killing.

Police say further updates will be issued as investigations progress and when it is operationally appropriate.
