Detectives have opened a murder investigation into the death of Kenya Airways pilot Kelvin Theuri Wachira, who died after suffering serious head injuries following an incident in Nairobi.
Investigators are now working to establish how the 33-year-old sustained the injuries that claimed his life. Wachira’s final hours reportedly began at the Nairobi West Prison Mess in Lang’ata, where he had gone out with friends on the night of July 19, 2026.
Police say an altercation is believed to have occurred before he was later discovered unconscious near the entrance of the facility along Lang’ata Road.
He was taken to Mbagathi Hospital by a man who identified himself as a Good Samaritan. Hospital records indicate that the pilot was admitted as an “unknown African male” after arriving with severe injuries.
Medical personnel noted that he was bleeding from the mouth and immediately began emergency treatment due to the seriousness of his condition.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Homicide Unit, led by Martin Nyuguto, has since obtained the hospital records as part of the inquiry.
Investigators are also reviewing CCTV footage from the hospital to help reconstruct the events leading up to Wachira’s admission.
The recordings reportedly show the pilot arriving at the hospital in a black saloon car, registration number KAP 199J.
The driver, who introduced himself only as a Good Samaritan, is said to have informed hospital staff that he worked as a security officer at Lang’ata Women’s Prison and had found the pilot unconscious outside Nairobi West Prison.
Investigators say the footage captures the man briefly speaking with a nurse and a security guard before leaving the hospital a few minutes later, while Wachira remained under medical care.
Doctors later attempted to transfer the pilot to Kenyatta National Hospital for specialised intensive care, but the move could not be completed because no ICU bed was available.
His condition continued to deteriorate despite efforts to save him, and he was pronounced dead at 8:10 p.m. on July 20, 2026.
A post-mortem examination concluded that Wachira died from blunt force trauma to the head, findings that have strengthened the homicide investigation.
As part of the probe, detectives have processed both the Nairobi West Prison Mess, where the pilot was last seen, and the location along Lang’ata Road where he was found unconscious.
His white Mercedes-Benz, which remained parked outside the prison mess after the incident, has also been taken to the DCI Nairobi Regional Headquarters for forensic examination.
Police say investigations are continuing as detectives seek to piece together the pilot’s final movements, identify those involved and establish the circumstances that resulted in his death.
The outcome of the inquiry is expected to provide answers to his family and determine whether criminal charges will be brought against those found responsible.
