Power Outage Plunges Nairobi and Several Regions Into Darkness

A widespread electricity outage hit several parts of the country on Wednesday night after a disruption to the national power supply, leaving homes, businesses and transport facilities without electricity.

In a statement issued at 9:05 p.m., Kenya Power said the interruption affected customers in Nairobi, the Coast region, the Mt. Kenya region and parts of the Central Rift.

The company, however, noted that electricity supply remained stable in sections of the North Rift and Western Kenya.

“Our technical teams are working to restore supply to the affected areas as quickly as possible,” Kenya Power said in a statement.

“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused and appreciate your patience as restoration efforts continue,” it added.

The outage was experienced across large sections of Nairobi, with digital posts showing parts of the Central Business District in darkness while a few buildings continued operating using backup generators.

Power interruptions were also reported at the Nairobi Railway Station and the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) terminus, where commuters shared videos online showing the impact of the blackout.

Kenya Power has not revealed what caused the disruption but said engineers had been deployed to restore electricity in the affected regions as quickly as possible.

As restoration efforts continued, many residents and businesses remained hopeful that electricity would be fully restored without further delays.

The incident once again highlighted the importance of a reliable power supply, particularly for transport services, businesses and other essential operations that depend on uninterrupted electricity.
