The National Police Service (NPS) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening collaboration with civil society organisations as part of efforts to promote rights-based policing, improve public safety, and enhance preparedness for the 2027 General Elections.
Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja hosted a delegation from Amnesty International Kenya and representatives of various civil society organisations on Tuesday during a courtesy call aimed at deepening cooperation on issues of mutual interest.
The discussions focused on accountability, community policing, peaceful public assemblies, and identifying practical areas for collaboration in line with the Constitution and the rule of law.
Addressing the meeting, Kanja thanked the delegation for the visit and reiterated the Service’s commitment to constructive engagement with civil society.
“Security is a shared responsibility and this partnership offers a valuable platform for rebuilding public trust, strengthening community policing, and identifying collaborative opportunities aligned with the Service’s Strategic Plan (2023–2027) and its agenda of transforming police stations and all other service areas into Centres of Excellence in service delivery,” he said.
The Inspector General further emphasized that ongoing reforms, particularly capacity-building and digitisation, remain key to enhancing integrity, transparency, accountability, and effective policing within the National Police Service.
Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Amnesty International Kenya Executive Director George Morara acknowledged the positive working relationship between the National Police Service and civil society organisations, reaffirming the organisation’s commitment to continued collaboration.
Morara stressed the importance of sustained engagement with communities to strengthen community policing and restore public confidence.
He also underscored the need for joint efforts in election security preparedness and addressing emerging security threats, including criminal gangs, through appropriate de-escalation strategies and rights-based approaches.
The Amnesty International Kenya delegation included Senior Campaigner for Civil Liberties Ramadhan Rajab and George Mwangala. Also present were representatives from The Institute for Social Accountability (TISA), International Alert, and the Independent Medico-Legal Unit (IMLU).
Several senior National Police Service officers attended the meeting, including directors responsible for corporate communication, training and research, legal services, ICT, and the Inspector General’s office.
