President Ruto backs broad-based government, says it fosters unity and inclusivity

President William Ruto has doubled down on his defense of the broad-based government, calling the formation a deliberate and God-sent step meant to unite the country and deepen inclusivity.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga shakes hands with President William Ruto after the two signed a coooperation agreement at KICC on March 7, 2025.

The political arrangement, formed in the wake of fierce antigovernmental protests in 2024, brought senior opposition figures into government in a bid to cool political tensions and build national cohesion.

Speaking on the arrangement, Ruto said the coalition that draws leaders from different political camps is designed to ensure that no community, county, or region is left behind or discriminated against in national development.

He framed the move as a calculated choice, not an error, describing it as a fresh start taken to steady the economy and drive growth that reaches all Kenyans.

The President insisted the broad-based structure shifts focus from political wrangling to service delivery.

“The arrangement is aimed at ending divisive politics to concentrate on a shared agenda of Bottom-Up economic transformation,” said President Ruto.

Ruto further argued that partnering with former opposition leaders was needed to address economic challenges, strengthen Parliament, and facilitate projects in health, agriculture, and infrastructure.

Government allies have pitched the setup as a National Rescue Mission rolled out to restore stability after a period of major political volatility.

Some leaders, including politician Gathoni Wamuchomba, have termed it a move to consolidate power.

Ruto, however, continues to hold that the partnership has improved the country’s unity and created space for joint work on development priorities.

The broad-based government remains a central plank of Ruto’s current term, with State House signaling that cooperation across the aisle will continue to guide policy and project rollout.
