Plane skids off runway and ends up in vegetation after landing in Mandera

An EBB Embraer aircraft registration 5Y-EBB, operating the Mandera-Nairobi route overran the runway upon landing on Friday and came to rest in nearby vegetation.

According to preliminary reports, all passengers and crew on board the aircraft were unharmed and safely evacuated.

Emergency response teams stationed at the airstrip swiftly intervened, rescuing passengers trapped inside the aircraft and securing the crash site.

Reports indicate the plane veered off the runway shortly after landing at Mandera Airstrip in Mandera County after arriving from Nairobi.

Images shared online show the aircraft badly damaged after it veered off the runway shortly after landing and came to rest in nearby vegetation. Officers are also seen assisting passengers from the aircraft.

While the exact cause of the loss of control has not yet been established, investigations have since been launched to determine whether mechanical failure or weather conditions could have contributed to the incident.

The incident comes shortly after a similar case in which a passenger aircraft veered off the runway at Wilson Airport in Nairobi.

According to officials, 39 people, including Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, were on board at the time of the incident; 34 passengers and five crew members.

The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) confirmed that the aircraft veered off the runway at approximately 8:55 pm but clarified that no injuries were reported.
