The National Assembly has acknowledged receipt of a proposal by Kiharu Member of Parliament Ndindi Nyoro to initiate a legislative process aimed at reducing various taxes and levies to lower fuel prices in the country.

In a communique issued by the Clerk of the National Assembly Martin Masinde, Nyoro’s proposal will be processed in line with Article 114 of the Constitution and the National Assembly Standing Orders.
“We thank you, Mheshimiwa, for your submission of the legislative proposals for consideration by the House, and request your availability to discuss them with the Parliamentary Budget Office and the aforementioned Committees,” the letter from the Clerk’s Office read in part.
The Clerk stated that the proposals have been transmitted to relevant committees of the House, for detailed review.
According to the letter, Ndindi Nyoro will be required to present representations on the fiscal implications of his proposals, particularly on the approved FY 2025/26 Budget, the FY 2026/27 estimates, and obligations linked to the Road Maintenance Levy Fund.
The Kiharu lawmaker was also invited to engage with the Parliamentary Budget Office and the relevant committees at an appropriate time to further discuss the proposed amendments.
In a statement issued on his socials, Nyoro noted that he welcomes Parliament’s response, saying the initiative has “taken off” and is now progressing through the formal stages.
He further indicated that he will appear before the relevant parliamentary committees as early as next week to present and defend the proposals as part of the ongoing legislative process.
He noted that while rising fuel prices directly affect the transport sector, their impact is far-reaching and is also felt by all Kenyans, both directly and indirectly, across different areas of the economy.
“The proposals are independent of whatever discussions other sectors of the economy will be having. Whereas rising prices directly affect the transport sector, they also affect all Kenyans directly and indirectly,” he said.
Ndindi Nyoro had earlier written to the Speaker of the National Assembly seeking an emergency parliamentary sitting to address rising fuel prices after a hike announced by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).
