Democratic Party leader Justin Muturi has called on the united opposition to urgently settle on a presidential flag bearer, arguing that continued delays risk weakening public confidence and denying supporters clear political direction ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking at ACK St. Andrew’s in Kiambu on Sunday, Muturi said opposition leaders were doing a disservice to their supporters by failing to agree on a single candidate to lead their coalition, urging them to move with speed and provide clarity.
“We are being unfair to our people. It is time to name our presidential flag bearer without further delay. Our supporters deserve clarity, certainty, and a leader they can rally behind,” Muturi said.
He warned that prolonged indecision could undermine the opposition’s ability to effectively organize and mobilize its supporters, saying voters needed certainty on who would carry the coalition’s presidential ambitions.
“The longer we wait, the more we deny our people the direction and confidence they need. The time to act is now,” he added.
Muturi’s remarks come amid ongoing discussions within the opposition over coalition unity and preparations for the 2027 General Election. Several opposition leaders have repeatedly maintained that they will first focus on strengthening their alliance before settling on a presidential candidate.
On July 6, 2026, Justine Muturi affirmed he will only support Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka for the presidency if he fails to secure the United Opposition’s presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 General Election.
“If I’m not selected as the presidential candidate, the only other principal in the United Opposition I can support is Kalonzo. Let’s stop beating around the bush,” Muturi said.
Muturi’s remarks add a new dimension to the ongoing debate within the opposition coalition, where several leaders have expressed interest in securing the presidential ticket while maintaining that they will eventually unite behind a single candidate to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
