Police Recover More Illegal Firearms in Elgeyo Marakwet and Tana River as Disarmament Drive Intensifies.

The National Police Service (NPS) has announced the recovery of more illegal firearms and ammunition in Elgeyo Marakwet and Tana River counties, marking another milestone in the ongoing nationwide disarmament campaign aimed at improving public safety and curbing armed crime.

According to the NPS, one more illegally held firearm was voluntarily surrendered in Elgeyo Marakwet on Monday, bringing the total number of illicit firearms recovered in the county to 357, alongside 2,342 rounds of ammunition since the operation began. In neighbouring Tana River County, residents also surrendered two AK-47 rifles and 10 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition.

Police said the continued recovery of illegal weapons highlights the success of sustained security operations and increasing cooperation between law enforcement agencies and local communities.

Authorities noted that every firearm removed from circulation reduces the risk of violent crimes such as armed robberies, livestock theft, retaliatory attacks, and other forms of insecurity that have long affected some parts of the country.

The NPS applauded members of the public who have chosen to voluntarily surrender illegal firearms and provide intelligence to security agencies, describing the partnership as a critical step towards restoring peace and stability in affected regions.

The Service also went ahead to emphasize that lasting security cannot be achieved through the possession of illegal weapons but through collective responsibility, trust between communities and security agencies, and adherence to the rule of law.

Police reaffirmed their commitment to sustaining the disarmament exercise through intelligence-led operations, strategic partnerships, and community engagement initiatives.

They also urged anyone still in possession of illegal firearms to surrender them voluntarily and encouraged members of the public to continue reporting suspicious activities to authorities.

The ongoing campaign forms part of broader government efforts to reduce armed violence, enhance public safety, and promote long-term peace in regions historically affected by insecurity and the proliferation of illegal firearms.
