Tension escalated in Nyandarua and Laikipia counties on Sunday after a bodyguard attached to Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata sustained a gunshot wound during a tour by the Linda Mwananchi movement, as political temperatures continue to rise ahead of the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election.

Governor Kang’ata said the injured officer, identified as Gitari, was shot in the chest after their convoy came under attack during the day’s activities.
He also claimed that the group was confronted by individuals he described as goons while attending a service at an AIPCA church.
“Today, we were first stoned by goons while we were at the AIPCA church, and my driver was injured after being shot in the chest by the police. It is so unfortunate. We came in peace, but what we got in return was being stoned,” Kang’ata told journalists.
The governor shared a photograph of the injured bodyguard and said the projectile remained lodged in his chest, although doctors were yet to determine whether it was a live round or a rubber bullet.
“We are yet to ascertain whether it is a live bullet or a rubber bullet. He is completely immobilised,” Kang’ata said.
He further alleged that his convoy was intercepted in Laikipia, where his vehicle was blocked before being taken over by the group involved in the confrontation.
The incident comes at a time of heightened political activity in the region as campaigns intensify ahead of the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election scheduled for next Thursday.
The reported violence has raised fresh concerns over security during the campaign period, with leaders urging authorities to ensure political activities are conducted peacefully and in accordance with the law.
