Gachagua Urges MPs to Reject Finance Bill 2026 in High-Stakes Vote

Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) Leader Rigathi Gachagua has directed Members of Parliament allied to him to vote against the Finance Bill 2026, arguing that the legislation would have adverse effects on Kenyan citizens.

In a statement posted on social media on Thursday June 18, Gachagua said the outcome of the vote would clearly show whether legislators stand with the people or against them.

He further described the vote on the Finance Bill 2026 in the National Assembly as a defining moment for Kenyans.

“Our Democracy for Citizens Party allied members have instructions to vote against the Finace Bill 2026 and stay in the House to force a Division. The People Kenya must know who is for or against them,” Gachagua said.

“Today’s vote at the National Assembly for or against the 2026 Finance Bill is a defining moment for the people of the Republic of Kenya. At the end of the day, the people of Kenya will know whether their elected representative supports measures that oppress them more or cares for them,” he added.

The former deputy president insisted that lawmakers who abstain or avoid the vote should be considered as having taken a position against the interests of the public.

“Those members who keep away from the vote and sit on the fence must deemed to be against the people of Kenya. There is no neutral position when the welfare of the people of Kenya is at stake,” he noted.

Gachagua further emphasized that united opposition legislators had been instructed to reject the bill and ensure a formal division is conducted to record individual voting positions.

The Finance Bill 2026 passed the Second Reading stage in the National Assembly on Wednesday, June 17, setting the stage for a high-stakes final vote.
