The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has secured conviction against two police officers charged with the murder of a suspect in Nyamatoki police cells in Nyamira on 19th August 2019.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, the ODPP said the court sentenced police corporal James Ogwagwa Nyakina to 30 years in prison, while police constable Jackson Kirui Kipngeno was handed a 10-year jail term.
The ODPP noted that the court also found that the two police officers who were working at the Nyamatoki police post jointly murdered Amos Kemosi Kereri.
According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on August 19, 2019, when the two officers jointly participated in the unlawful killing of the victim while he was in police custody.
“The prosecution established that the two officers, while on night patrol together with other police officers, arrested the deceased and took him to the said post, where the two assaulted him and when he was taken to the hospital the following morning, he was pronounced dead,” the ODPP’s statement read.
In building the case,the prosecution called a total of 14 witnesses to testify in support of its case, presenting evidence aimed at proving the charges before the court.
The ODPP has previously reiterated that it will continue to pursue justice in similar cases, maintaining that no one is above the law and reaffirming its commitment to accountability and the rule of law.
