Four rare Mountain Bongos Arrive in Kenya to Support Species Recovery Efforts

Kenya has received four critically endangered Mountain Bongos in a significant boost to ongoing conservation efforts, as the government moves to strengthen the species’ population through targeted breeding and restoration programmes. Antoine Moses to attempt 40,000 mangrove planting record in Mombasa

Kenya is set to host a major environmental restoration exercise at the Coast, where Guinness World Record holder Antoine Moses will attempt to plant 40,000 mangrove seedlings within 24 hours in Mombasa County.

The exercise will take place at the Mirarani site in Tudor Creek from April 30 to May 1 as part of efforts to restore degraded mangrove ecosystems and strengthen climate action initiatives in the country.

In a statement, the State Department of Forestry described the event as a landmark environmental campaign aimed at boosting conservation efforts along Kenya’s coastline.

“Kenya will host a historic 24-hour mangrove restoration effort at Mirarani Site, Tudor Creek in Mombasa County, from April 30 to May 1 2026,” the department announced.

The department said the initiative will be spearheaded by Antoine Moses, a Canadian environmental advocate who currently holds the Guinness World Record for planting the highest number of trees within 24 hours.

“The initiative, led by global environmental champion Antoine Moses, a Guinness World Record holder who planted 23,060 trees in 24 hours will attempt to plant 40,000 mangrove propagules in a single day,” it added.

According to forestry officials, the exercise is expected to support Kenya’s long-term environmental goals, including the government’s plan to grow more than 15 billion trees by 2032.

The restoration campaign will involve several partners, among them the Ministry of Environment, the Mombasa County Government and local conservation groups. Residents from surrounding communities have also been invited to take part in the exercise.

Mangroves are considered critical in protecting coastal areas from erosion, supporting marine biodiversity and absorbing carbon emissions linked to climate change.

Antoine Moses earned global recognition in July 2021 after planting 23,060 trees in Alberta, Canada, setting the current Guinness World Record.

However, his record is facing a possible challenge from Kenyan environmental enthusiast Hillary Kiplagat Kibiwott, who recently planted 23,326 trees in a single day.

Kiplagat achieved the feat on April 23 this year, surpassing Antoine’s tally.

Despite this, Guinness World Records is yet to officially verify and ratify the Kenyan’s attempt, meaning Antoine remains the current title holder until the review process is complete.
