Two people have died following a road accident along the Makutano, Sagana, Karatina dual carriageway at Kibirigwi Trading Centre in Kirinyaga County, renewing concerns over safety on the busy highway.

The crash occurred at Kwa Mwega in Kibirigwi when a trailer carrying electricity poles collided with another vehicle while travelling from Karatina towards Sagana.
Police said the trailer driver, aged 56, lost control before crashing into the rear of the other vehicle. He died at the scene.
Another victim later died while undergoing treatment in hospital. Meanwhile, a 34-year-old woman and her three-year-old child sustained injuries and were taken to Karatina Hospital for medical attention.
Police officers processed the scene before the damaged vehicles were towed to Sagana Police Station. Investigations have been launched to establish the circumstances that led to the accident.
The incident comes amid increasing concern over the rising number of road crashes reported along the dual carriageway, a key transport route linking several towns in the region.
Speaking during Madaraka Day celebrations at Kiangai Primary School in Kiine Ward, Kirinyaga West Deputy County Commissioner John Mbugua expressed concern over the growing number of accidents on the highway.
“Motorists to follow traffic rules and pedestrians to exercise caution when using the road ,” said Mbugua
emphasizing that road safety requires the cooperation of all road users.
Authorities continue to call for greater vigilance among drivers and pedestrians as efforts to reduce accidents along the corridor intensify.
