Former Catholic Priest Arrested Over Alleged Online Posts Advocating Unconstitutional Change of Government

A 44-year-old man has been arrested by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) over allegations of publishing online content that authorities claim advocated the unlawful overthrow of the government.

The suspect, identified as Edwin Gathangi Waiguru, was arrested during an operation conducted by officers from the DCI Headquarters’ Operation Action Team in Kirigiti, Kiambu County.

According to the DCI, the arrest followed investigations into content allegedly shared on Waiguru’s Facebook page, “Kinta Kinte II.” Investigators claim the publication outlined a plan involving sustained street protests throughout June 2026, attacks on selected public and private properties, tax boycotts, and the creation of a parallel transitional administration.

The DCI said the content is being subjected to forensic and evidential analysis as part of ongoing investigations.

In an unusual twist, investigators revealed that Waiguru is an ordained former Roman Catholic priest who later joined the Catholic Charismatic Church, a breakaway denomination that permits clergy to marry.

Despite leaving the Roman Catholic Church, authorities say he continued to wear clerical attire and had recently been associated with church activities in the Riruta area of Nairobi.

Following his arrest, Waiguru was taken to DCI Headquarters before being handed over to the Serious Crime Unit for further processing. He is expected to face charges under Section 40(1)(a)(iii) of the Penal Code, which criminalizes attempts to unlawfully overthrow a constitutionally established government.

The DCI maintained that while freedom of expression is protected under the Constitution, the right does not extend to incitement of violence, destruction of property, or actions deemed to undermine constitutional order.

Authorities have urged members of the public to exercise responsibility on digital platforms and report suspicious activities through established law enforcement channels.

The arrest comes just days after another suspect, identified by police as David Onyango Elgon, alias MC Adek Tatu, was apprehended in Mombasa County over alleged dissemination of inflammatory social media content.
