Police in Busia County have intercepted two separate drug-related consignments in coordinated operations along the Busia-Malaba corridor and within Busia town, as authorities intensify efforts to combat trafficking of illicit substances.

In the first incident, officers from Malaba Police Station intercepted a vehicle transporting a large consignment of suspected illicit ethanol along the Busia–Malaba road on 28 June 2026.
Police, who were on routine patrol in the Roiko area of Malaba Town, flagged down a black Toyota Voxy, registration number KDQ 972M. However, the driver allegedly failed to comply and sped off, prompting a chase.
The suspect later abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. A search of the vehicle uncovered 1,150 litres of suspected ethanol, which was seized as evidence.
The vehicle was towed to Malaba Police Station, where it was secured pending further investigations. Police are now working to establish ownership of the vehicle and trace the driver.
In a separate incident, officers from Busia Police Station recovered suspected narcotics during a patrol within the Busia Central Business District.
Acting on information from a member of the public, officers responded to a report of an unattended sack left at the Busia Bus Stage by an unidentified boda boda operator.
Upon inspection, the officers discovered nine parcels of suspected cannabis, weighing approximately 14.1 kilograms, wrapped in yellow tape.
The National Police Service said investigations are ongoing to identify those behind the consignments and to dismantle trafficking networks operating in the region.
The service commended officers involved in both operations for their vigilance and urged members of the public to continue sharing intelligence to support the fight against illegal drugs.
