Human rights activist Davis Lichuma has been found alive but in critical condition after days of uncertainty over his whereabouts following his disappearance during the June 25 Gen Z anniversary demonstrations in Nairobi.

Lichuma, who had been missing since the protests, is receiving specialised treatment after he was reportedly found and taken to hospital by a member of the public.

His reappearance comes after mounting pressure from human rights organisations, which had demanded that authorities account for his disappearance and threatened nationwide demonstrations if he was not traced.

According to the Social Justice Centres Working Group, Lichuma was discovered along Ngong Road by a good Samaritan, who rushed him to the emergency unit at Kenyatta National Hospital.

Those who attended to him said he appeared to have suffered severe physical injuries and was unable to communicate when he arrived at the facility.

Owing to the seriousness of his condition, he was later transferred to Nairobi Women’s Hospital for specialised medical care as doctors continue monitoring his recovery.

His disappearance had sparked widespread concern after he was last seen on June 25 near Parliament, where several activists were reportedly picked up by unknown individuals during the protests.

While six others later resurfaced over the weekend with injuries, Lichuma’s whereabouts had remained unknown until his rescue.

The incident has renewed criticism from rights organisations, which accuse security agencies of failing to address cases of enforced disappearances and violence against activists.

The Social Justice Centres Working Group called for those responsible to be held accountable, insisting that the circumstances surrounding the activist’s ordeal must be fully investigated.

“We will not accept silence, cover-ups or excuses,” the group stated.

The National Police Service had earlier confirmed receiving a missing person’s report filed at Nairobi’s Central Police Station after Lichuma’s disappearance.

Police also said allegations of enforced disappearances, torture and other human rights violations were being investigated.

Lichuma’s recovery is now being closely watched by family members, fellow activists and human rights defenders, who continue to demand an independent investigation into his abduction and the injuries he sustained.
