Police Launch Investigation After Robbers Target Irungu Nyakera’s Kisumu Hotel

Police in Kisumu have launched probe into an incident where a group of people believed to be robbers, stormed Fairways hotel located at the Kisumu’s Lake Basin Development Authority Mall (LBDA) and destroyed property.

According to police, the suspects vandalized property of unknown value and fled with several electronic gadgets.

The hotel, owned by former Principal Secretary Irungu Nyakera, was attacked by goons in the early hours of Wednesday.

Police say that Nyakera, a licensed gun owner, fired two shots in the air to scare away the suspects, who had already damaged one motor vehicle parked on the premises.

Speaking to the media at the scene, Nyakera claimed that the hotel has suffered about Ksh50 million due to alleged vandalism and legal disputes.

Earlier in a statement, Nyakera said that a dozen of goons attacked the Fairways hotel, damaging property and injuring staff.

“At 5:00am today, over 100 goons attacked my hotel in Kisumu, damaging property and injuring our staff, including tying up the security lady. Upon hearing the commotion, I quickly went after them, shooting twice in the air as they fled,” he said in a statement.

He condemned the incident and accused the Lake Basin Development Authority, with whom he is currently in court over arrears, of being behind the attack. Irungu Nyakera had earlier shared CCTV footage showing the suspected robbers storming the hotel.

The former PS also accused an incumbent Principal Secretary of orchestrating the attack.
