Police Intensify Crackdown on Illicit Brews, Narcotics in Nationwide Operations

The National Police Service (NPS) has intensified its nationwide crackdown on the manufacture, distribution and consumption of illicit brews and narcotic drugs, with coordinated operations across Kiambu, Nairobi and Bungoma counties leading to multiple arrests and the seizure of thousands of litres of illegal substances.

In Githunguri, Kiambu County, police officers acting on a tip-off from members of the public intercepted a suspect at the town’s main bus stage on Wednesday.

A search of the suspect’s belongings led to the recovery of 20 litres of chang’aa packaged in one-litre clear nylon sachets. The suspect was arrested and the illicit brew seized as evidence at Githunguri Police Station.

In a separate operation in Nairobi’s Starehe Sub-County, officers raided the Ngomongo area and arrested one suspect found in possession of 53 rolls of cannabis sativa and 26 Cosmos tablets. The suspect was booked at Korogocho Police Station as investigations continue.

Meanwhile, a joint operation involving police officers and National Government Administrative Officers (NGAO) in Bukembe, Bungoma County dismantled an illicit brewing den on Thursday.

The operation resulted in the arrest of three suspects and the recovery of more than 4,000 litres of illicit brew. The suspects remain in police custody awaiting processing and arraignment.

The National Police Service credited members of the public for providing information that led to the successful operations and reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying the fight against illicit alcohol and narcotics across the country.

Police urged the public to continue sharing information on illegal activities, saying community cooperation remains critical in efforts to curb the production, trafficking and consumption of illicit substances.

“The National Police Service commends the members of the public who provided timely information that led to these successful operations. We reiterate that the crackdown on illicit alcohol and narcotics will intensify nationwide,” the NPS said.
