In a statement released on Saturday, October 4, NPS spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga described the Standard headline, ‘Lagat’s Fresh Storm’, as controversial, aimed at tarnishing DIG Eliud Lagat’s reputation.
The media house alleged that the Deputy Inspector General of Kenya Police, was facing criticism from junior officers following accusations that he presided over the disappearance of money meant for police officers who secured CHAN 2024 tournament.
Standard Newspaper further implied that Lagat is encountering fresh revolt from junior and senior officers, who demand to know the whereabouts of the millions allocated for the police.
In response, NPS noted that the claims were deliberate distortions meant to target DIG Lagat personally.
“The NPS wishes to remind the public that the alleged “facts” reported are distortions that border on misinformation, constituting personal attacks and character assassination against the Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service (DIG-KPS),” Nyaga noted.
Nyaga insisted that The Standard misrepresented facts in their so-called expose. He revealed that the number of officers deployed to provide security during CHAN games was tripled from 2,986 to 8,546 due to emerging security issues.
“The purported exposé also fails to mention essential logistical considerations, such as vehicle fuel, catering for the officers, and the Daily Subsistence Allowance for those deployed from outside the Nairobi Region. These facts would have been crucial for the newspaper to consider before publishing,” the police spokesperson stated.
He further warned that such claims could attract legal consequences, emphasizing on the need of responsible and factual reporting.
