Nairobi Southern Bypass to Close Partially for Nairobi Marathon

Motorists using the Nairobi Southern Bypass will face temporary traffic disruption on Sunday, May 10, after the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) announced a partial road closure to pave the way for the 2026 Nairobi Marathon.

In a notice issued on Tuesday, May 5, KeNHA said the affected section will stretch between the Ole Sereni Interchange and the Lang’ata Road Interchange. The closure will begin at 6am and remain in effect until 1pm.

“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) wishes to inform the public that the Nairobi Southern bypass between Ole Sereni Interchange and Lang’ata Road Interchange will be temporarily closed on Sunday, May 10, 2026, from 6am to 1pm,” KeNHA stated.

“This road closure is to facilitate the 2026 Nairobi Marathon event to take place,” it added.

The authority advised motorists to seek alternative routes during the closure period to avoid delays and congestion.

According to KeNHA, drivers heading towards Lang’ata Road are encouraged to use Mombasa Road (A8) from the Ole Sereni Interchange through the Nyayo National Stadium roundabout.

“Motorists are, therefore, advised to use the Mombasa Road (A8) Highway from Ole Sereni Interchange to the Nyayo National Stadium roundabout to access Lang’ata Road as we cooperate with police and traffic marshals on site,” the authority said.

Police officers and traffic marshals are expected to be deployed along the affected routes to guide motorists and maintain order during the marathon.

The Nairobi Marathon is one of the city’s major annual sporting events and attracts thousands of participants each year.

The race features several categories, including the full marathon, half marathon, 10-kilometre and 5-kilometre races.

Over the years, the marathon has utilised key roads across Nairobi, including sections of the Nairobi Expressway, while also supporting charitable and fitness initiatives.
