Heavy rains and strong winds have caused widespread disruption in Mombasa and Kwale counties, leaving more than 100 households affected and prompting search operations for a boda boda rider who was swept away by floods.

In a statement issued on Thursday April 23, 2026 by the Kenya Red Cross, at least 103 households were affected, with nine people displaced across Jomvu, Kisauni, Changamwe and Likoni areas in Mombasa County.
Kenya Red Cross noted that homes were damaged in Freretown, with roofs blown off and flooding in low-lying areas.
Flash floods were also reported in Nyali, while Jomvu Model Hospital and Tudor Sub-County Health Facility became inaccessible due to flooding.
In Kwale, five households were affected in Lungalunga and Vanga areas, with search ongoing for a boda boda rider who was reportedly swept away while crossing a flooded bridge near Shimba Hills.
Kenya Red Cross affirmed that assessments were ongoing as response teams monitor the situation in the two counties.
