Matatu Operators Pledges Uninterrupted Public Transport Amid Planned June 25 Protests

The Matatu Owners Association (MOA) has assured Kenyans that public transport services will operate normally across the country on June 25, 2026, despite concerns over planned demonstrations marking the second anniversary of the Gen Z protests.

In a statement issued on Tuesday June 23, MOA Chairman Albert Karakacha urged matatu operators and staff to remain calm and maintain routine services amid fears of possible disruptions, saying the sector plays a key role in keeping the country moving even during tense periods.

“While we are aware of concerns regarding possible disruptions, we encourage all matatu owners, drivers, crew and staff to remain calm, exercise restraint, and continue providing transport services responsibly and professionally,” Karakacha said.

The association emphasized its commitment to the safety of passengers and transport workers, while condemning any acts of violence that could threaten public order.

“MOA strongly condemns all forms of violence, vandalism, arson, looting and destruction of property. The safety and well-being of passengers, transport workers, vehicles, businesses and the public remains our foremost priority,” the statement read.

Karakacha also expressed solidarity with families affected by the events of June 25, 2024, underscoring the need for justice and accountability as the country reflects on the anniversary.

“MoA stands in solidarity with the families and loved ones affected by the events of June 25, 2024. We believe that justice, accountability and respect for the rule of law remain essential to national healing,” he said.

The assurance comes amid heightened anxiety over demonstrations planned in several parts of the country to commemorate victims of the Gen Z protests. Organisers have maintained that the events will be peaceful, while authorities have warned against any unlawful activities.
