KETRACO appoints Kipkemoi Kibias as acting CEO

The Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO) has appointed Eng. Kipkemoi Kibias as its acting Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer.

In a communique on Friday, September 19, 2025, KETRACO’s Board of Directors stated that Kibias is taking over the role with immediate effect.

The Board also asserted that the appointment follows consultations with the Chief of Staff of Public Service and the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Energy and Petroleum.

“The Board of Directors, in consultation with the Chief of Staff & Head of Public Service and the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Energy & Petroleum, wishes to inform the general public of the appointment of Eng. Kipkemoi Kibias as the Acting Managing Director/CEO of the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Ltd (KETRACO) with effect from September 19, 2025,” the Board’s statement read.

They also paid tribute to Kibias’ predecessor, Dr Eng. John Muoki Mativo, acknowledging his contribution and invaluable service to the company.

“The Board of Directors would like to appreciate the outgoing Managing Director/CEO, Dr Eng. John Muoki Mativo, for his invaluable service and contribution to the Company. We wish him well in his future endeavours,” the Board said.

Prior to his appointment, Kipkemoi Kibias was KETRACO’s General Manager, System Operation and Power Management, working in various capacities including regional and county manager. He also held the regional coordination position at Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC).

According to KETRACO’s Board, ” Eng. Kipkemoi Kibias is a seasoned Engineer with over 20 years in the Power Sector. His expertise includes design and construction, power system planning, operation and maintenance.”

He holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Jomo Kenyatta University (JKUAT).

In addition, he also has Masters in Business Administration from Catholic University of Eastern Africa, Masters in Nuclear Power Plant Engineering from KEPCO International Nuclear Graduate School – KINGS, Ulsan, South Korea, and currently pursuing PhD in Energy Studies at Moi University.

The Board noted that Eng. Kibias is registered with the Engineers Board of Kenya, and is a member of the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK).
