Kenyan Shipping Vessel Detained in Tanzania, Maritime Authority Confirms

The Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) has confirmed that Tanzanian authorities have detained a Kenyan shipping vessel M/V Sea Mfalme.

In a press release on Thursday April 16, 2026, KMA said it has launched probe into the matter and reached out to their counterparts in Tanzania, to determine the circumstances under which the detention of the M/V Sea Mfalme occurred.

“The Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) acknowledges reports regarding the detention of a Kenyan-flagged vessel, M/V SEA MFALME, in the United Republic of Tanzania,” Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) announced on Thursday, April 16.

Adding that, “The matter is currently under review, with the Authority working closely with relevant Government agencies and counterparts in Kenya and Tanzania to verify the circumstances and facilitate appropriate follow-up actions.”

KMA assured that the situation is being handled through established intergovernmental and regulatory frameworks, further stating that additional communication will be issued.

The authority maintained that it remains committed to safeguarding the credibility of Kenya’s ship registry and ensuring adherence to applicable maritime standards.

The exact reason for the vessel’s detention has not been officially disclosed.
