Kenya Railways Breaks Silence After Demolition of Wamatangi’s Property Near Nyayo Stadium

Kenya Railways has warned all encroachers to vacate the Nairobi railway corridor, to pave way for the construction of a new railway station, as the country prepares to co-host 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Property was destroyed at a business premises reportedly linked to Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi.

In a statement issued on Wednesday January 14, 2026, the corporation announced that it is undertaking a key initiative aimed at providing a convenient transport system for fans and commuters during the tournament.

“The Government of Kenya is making requisite preparations to host a successful tournament,” Kenya Railways stated.

“To this end, all encroachers were advised and issued with notices in good time to vacate the railway corridor to pave the way for the construction of the station and spur line,” it added.

Kenya Railways further warned that it will demolish all illegal structures or property found within the corridor at the encroacher’s risk and cost.

“Kenya Railways is in the process of evicting all encroachers as we repossess all the land that has been identified for the above-mentioned development. Therefore, take note that any illegal structures/property found on the corridor will be demolished and/or removed without further notice and at the encroacher’s risk and cost,” the corporation warned.

According to Kenya Railways, the government intends to construct a railway station adjacent to Nyayo National Stadium and a railway spur line from the Nairobi Central Station through Nyayo National Stadium area, Kibera to Talanta Sports City Stadium.

It added that the new infrastructure will provide safe, reliable and affordable transport options for football fans accessing the venues of the soccer event.

“These developments aim to guarantee ease of movement and ensure Kenya hosts a successful AFCON tournament,” the statement added.

The Kenya Railways statement comes after several properties belonging to Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi was demolished on Tuesday night.

Kenya Railways had noted that the business premise, located along Douglas Wakiihuri Road, off Lang’ata Road, is built along a critical railway corridor and forms part of the corporation’s legally protected reserve.
