DCI rules out foul play in Cyrus Jirongo’s death, confirms it was a road accident.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has announced that the preliminary findings into the death of former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo, indicate that the incident was a road accident and not a result of foul play contrary to speculations.

In a statement released on Monday January 5, 2026, DCI stated that following the tragic death of the late Jirongo which occurred on the night of 13th December 2025 at Karai area along Nakuru-Nairobi highway, it launched investigations to establish circumstances surrounding the matter.

According to DCI, a team of officers consisting of homicide detectives, experts from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau, and forensic specialists from the National Forensic Laboratory, were deployed to probe the tragic incident.

The team visited the scene, secured and preserved key exhibits, documented physical and recovered CCTV footage from Egol Petrol Station for review and analysis.

Detectives also obtained bus manifest and amateur videos recorded at the scene to aid in the inquiry.

As part of the probe, DCI confirmed that statements were recorded from several key witnesses including Jirongo’s widow, Ann Lanoi Pertet, who was the first family member contacted after the incident.

“Furthermore, the investigative team recorded statements from several key witnesses, including Ann Lanoi Pertet, the deceased’s wife and the first family member contacted after the incident; Tiras Kamau Githinji, the driver of the ill-fated bus; Manoah Ekokwa Alukoya Olasi, the bus conductor; and staff members from Eagol petrol station,” DCI stated. 

DCI also revealed that several political leaders who had interacted with the late Jirongo on the evening of 12th December 2025, including National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula, Rebman Malala and Ibrahim Sambul, recorded statements to assist investigations.

“Further, seven passengers from the ill-fated bus presented themselves to assist in the investigation, and their statements were also recorded,” DCI added.

Additionally, DCI asserted that seven passengers of the Climax Coach bus presented themselves to record statements, with the DCI questioning Julius Kiprotich Chelule, the bus driver.

“Based on the evidence gathered and analysed to date, the incident appears to be a road traffic accident, with no indications of foul play,” the DCI revealed.

“Upon conclusion of the remaining investigative processes, the investigation file will be forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for appropriate directions,” the detectives added.

The agency further noted that the investigation file will be forwarded to the Office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for appropriate directions.

DCI also warned political leaders against making unsubstantiated statements that could compromise investigations or cause public anxiety.
