Bungoma, Kisumu Targeted in Renewed Anti-Illicit Brew Operations

Police have intensified the nationwide crackdown on illicit alcohol, with a multi-agency team destroying thousands of litres of illegal brew in Bungoma County and intercepting suspected chang’aa traffickers in Kisumu County.

In the first operation, carried out in the Mitua area of Bungoma North Sub-County, led to the destruction of approximately 3,200 litres of kangara as authorities moved to dismantle illegal brewing dens operating in the area.

Officials said the raid forms part of ongoing efforts to combat the manufacture and distribution of illicit alcohol, which continues to pose a major threat to public health and safety.

“Yesterday, a multi-agency team conducted a successful operation against illicit brews in the Mitua area of Bungoma North Sub-County, as part of ongoing efforts to eliminate illegal alcohol dens and ensure that those endangering lives through the illegal alcohol trade are brought to justice,” said the authorities.

Authorities also noted that the large quantity of kangara destroyed highlights the scale of the illegal alcohol trade in the region and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to taking firm action against those involved.

In a separate incident in Kisumu County, officers intercepted a motorcyclist in the Masogo area allegedly transporting 60 litres of chang’aa believed to have been destined for illegal distribution.

The suspect reportedly abandoned the motorcycle and escaped after spotting the officers. Police have since launched investigations aimed at identifying and arresting him.

The National Police Service said operations targeting illicit brews are continuing in various parts of the country as part of a broader campaign to curb alcohol-related harm and protect communities from the dangers associated with illegal alcohol consumption.

Police urged members of the public to support the ongoing crackdown by reporting suspicious activities to the nearest police station, through emergency numbers 999 or 911, or via the DCI toll-free line 0800 722 203 and WhatsApp number 0709 570 000.

Authorities maintain that sustained enforcement efforts remain critical in eliminating illegal alcohol dens and safeguarding the health and security of citizens.
