Residents Urged to Stay Vigilant as KWS Tracks Hyena Spotted in Syokimau

Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has assured residents of Syokimau and surrounding areas that a search is underway after a hyena was reportedly sighted within the area.

In a public notice issued on Tuesday May 12, 2026, KWS stated that the hyena was reported on Sunday May 10, 2026 along Mwananchi Road off Eastport Drive, prompting immediate deployment of a Problem Animal Control (PAC) team to the area.

KWS further noted that although the animal was not directly sighted by the responding team, officers confirmed the presence of fresh footprints, indicating recent movement within the vicinity.

“Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) wishes to assure residents of Syokimau and surrounding areas that response operations are ongoing following reports of a hyena sighting on Sunday, 10th May 2026, along Mwananchi Road off Eastport Drive,” KWS stated.

The wildlife service also advised members of the public to remain vigilant, avoid approaching or provoking the animal and to immediately report any wildlife sightings to the nearest KWS station or local authorities.

“KWS wishes to assure the public that all necessary precautionary measures are being undertaken and there is no cause for panic. Residents are, however, advised to remain vigilant, avoid approaching or provoking the animal, keep children under close supervision, and immediately report any wildlife sightings to the nearest KWS station or local authorities.”

KWS reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding both human life and wildlife as monitoring operations continue in the affected areas.
