TIFA Poll: Ruto Tops 2027 Presidential Race, Sifuna Emerges Leading Opposition Choice

President William Ruto remains the most preferred presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 General Election, according to the latest Trends and Insights for Africa (TIFA) opinion poll released on Friday, July 24.

The survey shows Ruto leading the race with 24 per cent support, maintaining the same level recorded in May and June 2026. TIFA attributes his lead to a fragmented opposition, with no single challenger currently commanding enough support to overtake the Head of State.

Among opposition figures, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna emerged as the most preferred candidate with 15 per cent support, followed by former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i at 14 per cent and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka at 13 per cent.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua trails the leading opposition contenders, while 20 per cent of respondents remain undecided on their preferred presidential candidate.

The poll further indicates that 62 per cent of Kenyans believe Gachagua’s best chance of helping the opposition defeat President Ruto is by backing the strongest opposition candidate rather than contesting the presidency himself.

Only 14 per cent want him to lead the opposition ticket, while 5 per cent believe President Ruto would still win regardless of the opposition’s choice.

On the broader political landscape, the survey found that 52 per cent of Kenyans oppose the Broad-Based Government, compared to 30 per cent who support it, highlighting continued public divisions over the current political arrangement.

The poll also established that 83 per cent of respondents are registered voters, while 17 per cent have not registered. Lack of national identification documents, limited time to register and disinterest in politics were cited as the main reasons for non-registration.

TIFA conducted the survey between June 13 and June 22, 2026, interviewing 2,048 respondents across nine regions of the country.
