Otiende Amollo calls Cherargei proposal to scrap ex-presidents’ perks a ‘waste of time’

Rarieda Member of Parliament Otiende Amollo has termed as a waste of time a motion by Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei, seeking to abolish retirement benefits for former presidents.

In a statement shared on Wednesday, April 6, 2026, Hon Amollo called on Kenyans to disregard the matter and avoid engaging in the debate being advanced by the outspoken senator.

The Rarieda MP noted that the benefits accorded to former presidents are provided for under Article 151(3) of the Constitution of Kenya.

“Some debates are really a waste of time. This purported motion by Senator Cherargei is idle and not worthy of discussion. The benefits due to any former president cannot be altered to their disadvantage during their lifetime. We specifically inserted this in the Constitution (Article 151(3)),” Amollo stated.

Hon. Amollo has joined a section of leaders defending former President Uhuru Kenyatta, who is facing pressure from Kenya Kwanza politicians seeking to scrap his retirement package, accusing him of engaging in politics.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has dismissed Cherargei’s push, saying former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s retirement benefits cannot be scrapped as they are entrenched in the Constitution unless amended through a referendum, not a Senate motion.

“There is no way Uhuru Kenyatta’s retirement benefits can be scrapped because they are entrenched in the Constitution. You cannot scrap something that is entrenched in the Constitution through a Senate motion; it can only be done through a referendum,” Sifuna said.

“Additionally, the Senate has no authority to discuss funding beyond the funds allocated to counties. Cherargei’s motion is going nowhere,” he added.

Uhuru Kenyatta’s troubles began on Friday, May 1, when, in a speech delivered via phone call during the homecoming celebration for Jubilee SG Hon. Moitalel Ole Kenta in Narok, he took issue with those seeking to limit his involvement in politics, stating that he has a right to defend his party.

He vowed that he will continue speaking his mind and will not be silenced or gagged by anyone.
