The government says preparations are on course for this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations, with key infrastructure projects at the main venue and across Wajir nearing completion, as the town gears up to host the national event.

While speaking to the press on Thursday during an inspection of the ongoing construction of Wajir Stadium, National Administration Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, alongside Defence Principal Secretary Patrick Mariru, said the progress of the works was on track and satisfactory.
PS Omollo praised the pace of work and coordination between national and county teams, noting that the efforts are key to ensuring Wajir successfully hosts this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations, the first time the event will be held in Northern Kenya.
According to the Interior PS, the main stadium is between 65 and 70 percent complete, with works projected to be finalized at least two weeks ahead of schedule ahead of the June 1 fete.
He said road infrastructure works across Wajir, including key access routes, are continuing, with additional improvements being made at the County Commissioner’s residence set to host the State luncheon.
“We are encouraged by the progress made so far and the strong collaboration between the National Government and the County Government. From the stadium to roads, water, and power, all key infrastructure is on course, and we are confident that Wajir will be ready ahead of time to host a successful Madaraka Day celebration,” Omollo said.
Omollo described the upcoming celebrations as a historic moment for residents of Wajir and the wider Northern Kenya region, noting that the government is committed to decentralising national events and taking them to all parts of the country.
“This will be a historic moment for the people of Wajir and the entire Northern Kenya region. As a Government, we are proud to take national celebrations to all parts of the country,” he said.
