NPS warns of possible flooding in several Nairobi estates as heavy rains persist

The National Police Service (NPS) has issued a warning over possible flooding in several estates within Nairobi, as heavy rains continue to persist across the city and surrounding areas.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, the NPS noted that, together with other government agencies, it continues to remain on high alert as heavy rains persist and affect several parts of the country.

The NPS further stated that situation has already resulted in significant disruption and damage, underscoring the seriousness of the ongoing weather conditions and the need for heightened public vigilance.

“Within Nairobi, the situation is further exacerbated by rapidly rising water levels in major rivers, including the Nairobi, Mathare, Ngong, Kamiti and Athi rivers. These waterways all drain into the larger Athi River system, which is currently running at critically high levels” NPS said.

NPS warned that estates located near rivers face a heightened risk of flooding, even in areas where rainfall may appear minimal.

The service added that caution should be exercised in relation to flash floods, which can develop rapidly and without warning, often catching people off guard.

Areas at risk near the Nairobi River include estates in Kileleshwa, Lang’ata, Ngara, Madaraka, Eastleigh and Kawangware.

Flood risks are also high in southern areas of the city, such as Kibera and South C, which lie along the Ngong River.

Further areas at risk include Tatu City, Ruiru, Kitengela, Mlolongo and Syokimau, which are near Athi River.

The National Police Service has also urged motorists to exercise caution on several key routes that are at risk of becoming impassable due to heavy rainfall.

The service further warned that poor visibility, waterlogged road surfaces, and unpredictable driving conditions are significantly increasing the risk of road accidents for all road users.

“Given these conditions, the public is strongly urged to exercise extreme caution at all times by avoiding driving through or walking in moving water, as even shallow currents can be deceptively strong and capable of sweeping away vehicles or individuals.”

The National Police Service has urged the public to take proactive measures to safeguard themselves and their families as heavy rains continue to affect various parts of the country. Residents in flood-prone areas have been advised to relocate to higher ground without delay if instructed to do so.

The service also encouraged the public to remain alert and follow regular updates from the Kenya Meteorological Department and other relevant authorities.
