Wamalwa points to possible collaboration with Oparanya to strengthen Luhya front

Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) Party Leader Eugine Wamalwa has hinted at the possibility of working together with Cooperatives and SMEs Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya, days after being urged by Speaker Moses Wetangula to abandon the opposition.

Through a post on his social media handles on Wednesday, Wamalwa informed the public that he held a consultative meeting with CS Oparanya.

He acknowledged having worked with Oparanya and expressed his intention to collaborate with him in future for the sake of Western Region unity.

“Delighted to catch up with my brother CS Dr Oparanya, with whom I have worked closely in the past and intend to continue working with in the future, in our quest for the unity and prosperity of the Mulembe Nation and the greater Kenyan Nation. Watch this space!” Wamalwa said.

This comes days after National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula pleaded with the DAP-K leader to ditch opposition and join government.

Wetangula, who was speaking at a funeral also attended by Wamalwa on Saturday January 24, 2026, reiterated that Luhya unity is vital as the country prepares for the upcoming 2027 general elections.

He stated that it is Eugine Wamalwa who should join them and not vice versa. Wetangula further informed Wamalwa that his presence in government, alongside Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and CS Oparanya, would create a united Luhya front capable of negotiating for better positions.

“Eugene, I agree. Let’s unite. I have talked with Oparanya, I have talked with Musalia, and if you look at how we are, Musalia, Oparanya, and I are on one side, and that is why you should come to where we are so that we can build a huge team so that we can bargain harder and better,” Wetangula said.

“The door is open, my brother; if it means opening the door for you, I will do so,” he added.

The DAP-K boss, a key figure in the United Opposition, has been a critic of the Kenya Kwanza government and has vowed never to work with President Ruto. He once revealed that he was offered the Cabinet Secretary for Defence position but turned it down.
