Multi-Vehicle Collision Along Nairobi–Mombasa Highway Leaves Seven Dead, 27 Critically Injured

At least seven people died and 27 others sustained critical injuries following a major road traffic accident involving a truck, a bus, two private vehicles, and a motorcycle at Salama along the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway on Sunday night, June 7, 2026.

In a statement issued by the Kenya Red Cross, emergency responders evacuated the 27 critically injured casualties to Sultan Hamud Sub-County Hospital for urgent treatment. Additional victims suffered minor injuries and also received medical attention at the facility.

“27 critically injured casualties were evacuated to Sultan Hamud Sub-County Hospital following a major road traffic incident involving a truck, a bus, two private vehicles and a motorcycle at Salama on the Mombasa–Nairobi Highway last night,” Kenya Red Cross reported.

The crash occurred around 11 p.m., triggering a swift multi-agency response involving the Kenya Red Cross, county emergency services and the National Police Service.

Rescue operations at the scene lasted several hours, with teams working through the night to assist survivors, recover victims, and clear the wreckage. The highway section was reportedly cleared by approximately 4:50 a.m. on Monday.

“Kenya Red Cross supported emergency response efforts alongside county emergency services, the National Police Service and other partners” Kenya Red Cross,” the humanitarian organization noted.

Details on the exact cause of the collision remain under investigation by police. The Mombasa-Nairobi Highway is one of Kenya’s busiest transport corridors, frequently plagued by serious accidents due to heavy traffic, overtaking maneuvers, and varying road conditions.

This latest incident has once again highlighted ongoing road safety concerns along the route. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the deceased or further details on the vehicles involved, such as whether it was a head-on collision
