Key Witness Recounts Final Days of Tob Cohen Before Disappearance in Murder Trial

Testimony in the murder trial of Dutch businessman Tob Cohen continued on Tuesday, with prosecutors presenting detailed accounts of the final days before his disappearance and death in 2019 in the case against Sarah Wairimu Kamotho.

A key witness, a worker at Cohen’s home, told the court that July 19, 2019 was the last time he saw the businessman alive.

He later returned to the residence only to find Cohen missing. The court heard that Sarah allegedly instructed staff to tell visitors that Cohen had travelled to Thailand for medical treatment, a claim prosecutors say was intended to mislead those asking about his whereabouts.

“Madam (Sarah) had told us that on 22nd Tom had gone for medical…so my interpretation is that madam didn’t want anyone to know…” the witness said.

He also told the court that Cohen had previously confided in him, alleging that he had been injured during a domestic altercation involving Sarah in the days before his disappearance.

Prosecutors revisited earlier statements in which the same employee described noticing unusual activity within the compound while on a lunch break.

He said he observed three mounds on a concrete structure covering the septic tank, something he had not seen earlier.

He further testified that vegetation was being cleared and placed over the same area during that period, raising suspicion as the events unfolded.

“In my statement I said in the afternoon they were already covered up by the heaps because they were doing cleaning on Monday.

“PW1 was doing cleaning and PW2 was in the house…there was another guy that was the one who was working on the garden specific location,” he recalled.

The hearing also revealed that Cohen had earlier reached out to lawyer Judy Thongori, seeking legal action against Sarah over alleged defamatory claims made to authorities.

Sarah Wairimu, who is represented by defence counsel Pravin Bowry, was present in court as the testimony was heard.

The matter was adjourned to June 15, 2026, as the prosecution continues to build its case surrounding the circumstances of Cohen’s death.
