Kenya once again demonstrated its dominance on the world stage, clinching the second place with a total of 11 medals, just behind the USA, at the World Athletics Championships held in Tokyo, Japan.
During the 9-day global competition, Team Kenya secured seven gold, two silver and two bronze, reaffirming the country’s strength in athletics.
Beatrice Chebet gave Kenya its first gold, after winning the women’s 10,000m and 5000m. Peres Jepchirchir secured victory in the Women’s marathon in 2:24:43 after a fierce battle with Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa.
Faith Kipyegon continued with her impressive record, claiming her third consecutive world title in the 1,500m and finishing ahead of teammate Dorcas Ewoi.
Kenya’s Faith Cherotich emerged victorious in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase, clocking an exceptional time of 8:51.59. Meanwhile, Emmanuel Wanyonyi extended his 800m reign and solidifying his track dominance.
Lilian Odira wrapped Kenya’s list of medals, breaking the World Athletics Championships 800m record with a magnificent 1:54.62.
President Ruto commended Team Kenya for their outstanding performance, saying that they had once again shown the world that Kenya is a nation of champions.
“Well done, Team Kenya! You have conquered the global stage at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo; finishing second in the world and proudly claiming first in Africa.” He continued, “With an incredible 11 medals including 7 gold, 2 silver, and 2 bronze, you have written yet another golden chapter in our nation’s sporting history.”
“You have flown our flag high, silenced every doubter, and shown the world that Kenya is not just a country of runners, but a nation of champions; a people who rise, conquer, and shine with unmatched excellence,” Ruto wrote on his socials.
With the World Athletics Championships 2025 now concluded, Kenya makes history by becoming the first country in the world to win all distance events.
