IEBC expresses concern over recent political violence in Kasipul that left two dead ahead of the upcoming by-elections

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has strongly condemned the political clashes reported in Kasipul Constituency ahead of the November 27 by-elections.

IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon

In a statement issued on Friday November 7, the electoral body led by its chairperson Erastus Ethekon, warned that such acts may lead to disqualification of candidates or parties deemed liable.

Ethekon stated that the Commission has deployed a team of investigators to determine the facts adding that legal action will be taken against those involved.

“The Commission condemns, in the strongest terms possible, the senseless acts of violence that have, reportedly, led to the loss of two lives and injuries as confirmed by security agencies in Homa Bay,” Ethekon said.

“Non-adherence to the Code attracts serious penal consequences, including disqualification of candidates or parties found culpable. In this regard, the Commission has dispatched an investigation team with clear instructions to establish the facts and recommend appropriate action in line with the Electoral Code of Conduct,” he added.

The IEBC chair further reminded everyone taking part in the electoral process to strictly observe the Electoral Code of Conduct, which requires all participants to uphold peace, tolerance and respect for the Rule of Law, until the completion of elections.

He also called on security agencies within Homabay County to expedite probe into the heinous acts and bring the perpetrators to justice. He noted that “Violence has no place in a democracy and must be met with firm and lawful response.”

At least two people were killed and several others injured, after violent clashes erupted on Thursday evening between supporters of independent candidate Philip Aroko and ODM’s Boyd Were at a political rally in Opondo, Central Kasipul Ward, HomaBay County.
