The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has strongly criticised recent statements by certain political actors claiming they will influence the 2027 presidential election through extra-legal means, describing the remarks as reckless and unacceptable.

In a statement issued on Tuesday May 26, the electoral body expressed concern over the utterances, which it said have caused disquiet and risk undermining public confidence in Kenya’s democratic processes.
“These utterances, which have elicited considerable disquiet within the electoral environment, pose a real risk of distorting public perception of Kenya’s democratic processes,” IEBC said. “IEBC considers such utterances to be unacceptable, reckless, and entirely baseless.”
The electoral body reiterated that the constitutional mandate to conduct and supervise elections rests solely with the IEBC under Article 88 of the Constitution and cannot be controlled or manipulated by political actors or outside interests.
The Commission also urged all Kenyans to refrain from amplifying the claims, emphasising that the statements are premature and irresponsible. IEBC further noted that it has not yet declared any elections nor published notices for the 2027 General Election.
Despite the provocations, the Commission reaffirmed its commitment to its constitutional mandate. It assured the public and stakeholders of its dedication to safeguarding independence and impartiality in preparation for the 2027 polls.
“IEBC assures the public and all stakeholders that it will continue to safeguard its independence and impartiality, while discharging its constitutional mandate,” the Commission assured.
At the same time, IEBC called on political leaders and stakeholders to support efforts aimed at strengthening public trust and safeguarding Kenya’s democratic gains.
