The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has secured a 20-year prison sentence for a man convicted of defiling and murdering his 17-year-old niece in Garissa County last year.

Justice Onyiego handed down the sentence to Shafa Bilal Shaklane, after the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt. The court heard that the offence occurred on 16th November 2025 at Borehole 5 in Fafi Sub-County.
“The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has secured a 20-year sentence for a Garissa man who defiled and killed his 17-year-old niece in 2025,” DPP stated.
“While sentencing Shafa Bilal Shaklane, Justice Onyiego said evidence presented in court by Prosecution proved the case beyond doubt,” DPP noted.
According to testimony from the victim’s 13-year-old sister, the accused approached the deceased while the two girls were sleeping on mattresses in the house.
The minor told the court that Shaklane began fondling the 17-year-old’s breasts. When the girl resisted, he allegedly used a scarf to strangle her while pushing her against the wall.
Medical evidence presented in court confirmed that the deceased died of hypoxia (lack of oxygen) secondary to strangulation.
The court noted that the young witness had no apparent grudge against her uncle and therefore had no reason to fabricate the evidence against him.
