The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has begun probing claims that armed groups interfered with the recently concluded Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced.
Speaking during an interdenominational prayer and thanksgiving service at Kwanza Girls High School in Trans Nzoia County, Murkomen said investigators have already opened an inquiry to establish the identity of those allegedly involved, determine the offences committed and identify anyone who may have been affected.
“The DCI has opened an investigation file to establish who these individuals are, the crimes they committed, who they harmed, and why they were there, so that appropriate legal action can be taken,” said the CS.
Murkomen also responded to allegations made by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua concerning the alleged sexual assault of women during the by-election period. While dismissing the claims, he urged anyone with credible information or evidence to cooperate with investigators by recording statements to support the investigations.
The Interior CS further cautioned politicians against using tribal, inflammatory or divisive language, warning that reckless political statements could undermine national peace and security.
“You don’t have to burn our country just to win one seat,” he warned.
Turning to national politics, Murkomen defended the Kenya Kwanza administration’s development agenda, saying the government’s ongoing projects would strengthen President William Ruto’s chances of securing another term in office.
“Looking at the programmes this government is implementing, I am confident that the people of Kenya will choose day over darkness, they will vote President Ruto overwhelmingly,” he said.
Murkomen also revealed that security agencies are preparing another operation targeting organised criminal gangs in Kitale Town and neighbouring areas. He said the crackdown is intended to improve public safety and create a secure environment for businesses and residents.
“We are coming for round two. If you are involved in robbing or harming people, we will take firm action against you. We will not ask about your political affiliation,” he warned, adding that similar operations will be extended to other towns across the country.
The investigations into the Ol Kalou by-election are expected to establish whether criminal elements influenced the electoral process, even as the government maintains that those found responsible for any unlawful acts will face the full force of the law.
