Twenty-two pedestrians have been arraigned in court for allegedly obstructing the free flow of traffic at the Allsops footbridge in Nairobi, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has said.

The authority said the arrests were part of ongoing efforts in collaboration with the National Police Service (NPS) and Nairobi City County to promote safer road use and improve compliance among pedestrians.

“A total of 22 pedestrians have been arraigned in court for willfully obstructing the free flow of traffic at Allsops footbridge,” NTSA said.

In a statement posted on X, NTSA said it would continue educating pedestrians on the importance of using designated crossing points, including footbridges, to enhance road safety.

“As at 30th June 2026, Pedestrians accounted for 38% of all road traffic crashes. This is alarming and ending pedestrian fatalities requires concerted efforts from everyone, and we call upon all stakeholders to play their part,” the authority said.

NTSA urged pedestrians to take greater responsibility as primary road users, noting that compliance with road safety measures was critical in reducing accidents and deaths.

“As the primary road users, pedestrian compliance is vital. Pedestrians must commit to using available footbridges and designated crossings at all times,” the authority said.

The agency further called on all stakeholders, including motorists, pedestrians and enforcement agencies, to work together in promoting responsible road use.

The move comes amid continued concerns over pedestrian safety in urban areas, where illegal road crossings and obstruction of traffic flow remain common challenges.
