The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has confirmed the arrest of comedian Erick Omondi at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), in connection with criminal offences allegedly committed during recent fuel-related protests in Nairobi.

In a statement released on Friday, Eric Omondi was apprehended by detectives from DCI Central working jointly with the CRIB Nairobi Region, based on credible intelligence.
The DCI said he was taken to the Nairobi Region DCI Headquarters to record a statement and undergo processing ahead of his arraignment in court.
According to the DCI, the arrest forms part of ongoing investigations into incidents that occurred under the guise of the fuel protests. Several other suspects linked to the same cases were arrested and arraigned in court on May 18, 2026.
In its statement, the DCI emphasized that while the Constitution protects the right to peaceful assembly, picketing, and demonstrations, such rights must be exercised responsibly and within the law.
“Any criminal acts committed under the guise of protests, demonstrations, or civic action will be investigated and dealt with firmly in accordance with the law,” the DCI said. “The DCI will not hesitate to take decisive action against anyone involved in such offences. No matter where you hide, the long arm of the law will catch up with you.”
In a post shared on his social media accounts hours earlier, comedian Eric Omondi claimed he had been taken into custody by eight men and was unaware of where they were taking him.
“Just been arrested by a group of 8 non-uniformed men. I have no idea where we are headed!!!” Omondi wrote.
