CS Murkomen declares Wednesday May 27 a public holiday to mark Eid-ul-Adha,

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has formally declared Wednesday, May 27, a public holiday to mark the Muslim festival of Eid-ul-Adha.

The declaration was made through a special issue of the Kenya Gazette dated May 25, 2026.

“It is notified for the general information of the public that, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 3 (1) of the Public Holidays Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration declares that, Wednesday, the 27th May, 2026, shall be a public holiday to mark Eid-ul- Adha,” the notice read.

Eid al-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is the second major Islamic holiday, honoring Prophet Ibrahim’s (Abraham) willingness to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God.

The festival coincides with the conclusion of the annual Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, and falls on the 10th day of Dhul Hijjah, the final month of the Islamic calendar.

Muslims mark the celebration by offering special prayers on the morning of the first day and performing the ritual sacrifice of livestock, and share the meat among relatives, neighbours, and the needy as an act of charity and compassion.
