Court Convicts Three Kamiti Prison Escapees in Terrorism Case

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has secured the conviction of three men linked to the Kamiti Maximum Security Prison escape.

According to the ODPP, the three convicts namely; Musharaf Abdala, Mohamed Ali Abikar, and Joseph Juma Odhiambo, were found guilty by the Kahawa Anti-Terrorism Court after the prosecution successfully proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.

The court heard that the incident occurred on the night of 14th November 2021 and the morning of 15th November 2021 at GK Kamiti Maximum Security Prison in Nairobi County, where the accused persons knowingly escaped from lawful custody.

During the trial, the ODPP called 10 witnesses whose testimonies and evidence were instrumental in securing the guilty verdict.

In its statement following the ruling, the prosecution led by Counsel James Muchirah, welcomed the outcome, noting that the conviction reflects its continued efforts to combat terrorism, uphold the rule of law, and ensure offenders are brought to justice.

Principal Magistrate Gideon Kiage convicted the three and directed that the matter be mentioned on 18th June 2026 for sentencing proceedings.

The ODPP said the outcome marks a significant milestone in its pursuit of accountability in terrorism-related cases and reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening public safety and national security through effective prosecution.
