Police have recovered suspected cannabis following a road traffic accident along the Chemelil-Miwani-Kisumu Road in Kisumu County.

According to the National Police Service (NPS), officers from Miwani Police Station responded to the incident at Ombeyi Junction on Sunday, June 7, after receiving reports of a vehicle that had veered off the road and rolled into a ditch.
Upon arrival, officers established that a white Mazda CX-5, registration number KDX 905A, had been involved in the accident. Members of the public had already rescued the occupants and alerted authorities. However, the occupants had fled the scene before police arrived.
“On 7th June 2026, police officers from Miwani Police Station responded to a road traffic accident along the Chemelil–Miwani–Kisumu Road at Ombeyi Junction,” NPS stated.
“Upon arrival at the scene, officers established that a white Mazda CX-5 motor vehicle, registration number KDX 905A, had veered off the road and rolled into a ditch. Members of the public had rescued the occupants before informing the police. However, by the time officers arrived, the occupants had fled the scene,” NPS added.
A subsequent search of the vehicle and the accident scene led to the discovery of cannabis sativa allegedly being transported in the vehicle. The suspected narcotics were seized and secured as exhibits.
Police towed the vehicle to Miwani Police Station, where it remains detained pending further investigations. Detectives are working to trace the occupants and establish the circumstances surrounding the transportation of the suspected drugs.
The National Police Service commended members of the public for promptly reporting the incident and reiterated its commitment to combating narcotics trafficking and enhancing public safety.
Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
